Your guide to checked baggage
Confirm your allowance
If you’ve already booked your flight, you can see your ticketed baggage allowance at Manage booking.
If you haven’t booked yet, find your baggage allowance here, and when you make your booking online.
Review what you can take
Got a power bank, medical equipment or things that could be considered dangerous?
Make sure what you pack complies with security requirements by checking for dangerous goods.
Check your weight and size
Your allowance is based on size and weight, or by number of pieces and weight, depending on where you’re flying to.
Your baggage needs to fit within our maximum size, and it’s a great idea to check your weight allowance before you fly.
You also have a carry-on baggage allowance
Bring your essentials on board, along with items that can’t be packed in checked baggage. Find out how much carry-on you take and what you can bring on board.
Economy checked baggage allowances

Maximum sizes for checked baggage
Along with weight restrictions, there are also size restrictions on what you can bring with you. To calculate the size of your luggage, add together the width, height and depth of the piece.
Baggage dimensions for Australian domestic flights
For example, 56cm height + 34cm width + 23cm depth = 113cm maximum size. This is under the 140cm limit.
Baggage dimensions for international flights
For example, 76cm height + 52cm width + 29cm depth = 157cm maximum size. This is under the 158cm limit.
Qantas Frequent Flyer baggage allowances
If you’re a Qantas Club member or have Silver Frequent Flyer status or higher, enjoy extra baggage allowances on domestic and international Qantas flights.
When your Frequent Flyer baggage allowance applies
Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club member allowances only apply to:
- Qantas and QantasLink-operated flights with a QF number, excluding Dash 8 aircraft.
- Emirates (EK) operated flights between and within Europe, The Middle East, North Africa, Asia, New Zealand and Australia when booked with either a QF or EK flight number on your ticket.
They do not apply to Jetstar and Qantas codeshare services (flights operated by carriers other than Qantas, QantasLink and Emirates).
Frequent Flyer redemptions and partner airlines
- Some Qantas Frequent Flyer redemption flights on carriers such as Alaska Airlines, Iberia, WestJet and American Airlines don’t include checked baggage as part of the fare.
- To find out your checked baggage allowance, go to Manage booking.
- To purchase checked baggage for flights operated by another carrier, contact them directly with your booking reference before you travel, to avoid excess charges at the airport.

Important information and exceptions
Some additional things you need to know about baggage allowances for Qantas-operated flights.
Things to know
Baggage allowances can’t be combined
Your baggage allowance is not cumulative (for example, whether you're a Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer, a Qantas Club member, or both; the same allowance applies).
Weight-based versus piece-based allowances
Your baggage allowance is based on how many pieces you can check in for domestic Australian flights and international flights to North or South America. But when you’re flying internationally outside of North or South America, your allowance is based on weight. So you can check as many items as you like, as long as their total weight is under your allowance.
No single piece can exceed 32kg (70lb), regardless of your total baggage allowance.
Baggage allowances to the USA or Canada on partner airlines
For travel between Australia and the USA or Canada, usually (but not always), Qantas' baggage rules apply. If you’re travelling on a partner airline, check your baggage allowance at Manage booking if you’ve made a booking, or when making a booking online.
Medical and mobility equipment
Passengers requiring it for their own use may also check in medical/life dependant equipment and two pieces of mobility equipment without additional cost.
Mobility equipment - USA flights only
There’s no limit on the number of pieces of mobility equipment that customers with a disability can carry on, and it doesn’t count towards the carry-on baggage allowance.
Exceptions
Baggage allowance exception for Dash 8 services
Only one piece of baggage to 23kg (50lb) can be taken on Dash 8 flights, due to weight restrictions. Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club additional checked baggage allowances don’t apply.
Lord Howe Island is an exception to this rule
The Lord Howe Island baggage allowance is two pieces, with a combined total weight of up to 23kg (50lb), with each piece not exceeding:
- 1st piece up to 14kg (30lb) and
- 2nd piece up to 9kg (20lb). This piece may need to travel separately, so pack accordingly.
Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands
- International baggage allowances apply; refer to the Economy allowances for 'Rest of World'.
- For bookings from 1 November 2025, Additional Baggage limits apply. Your Checked Baggage allowance, plus any Additional Baggage purchased, cannot exceed 65kgs (143lbs) per person. This limit also applies to all Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members.
- Priority bag process: If you're travelling with multiple pieces you will be asked to nominate a priority bag (up to 30kgs). If your flight incurs weight restrictions, the rest may travel on the next available service, so pack accordingly.
- Find out more information about day of travel requirements and packing perishable items.
Baggage allowances on multi-stop journeys
When your journey includes different airlines
- When you check in bags for an international multiple-sector journey, usually the baggage allowance of the first carrier will apply. This is sometimes called the most significant carrier.
- If your bags aren’t checked through to your final destination, shown on your baggage tag and receipt, you may have a different baggage allowance each time you check in your bags.
- If your final ticketed destination is within the USA or Canada, the airline whose flight number appears for the first flight on your ticket will determine which baggage allowances apply.
When your journey includes domestic and international flights
The Qantas international checked baggage allowance will apply to your domestic and international flights if:
-
both flights are on the same ticket; or
-
flights are on different tickets but the connection is on the same calendar day* and you present both tickets when checking in your baggage. Exceptions apply.
The best way to check your ticketed baggage allowance for all legs of your booked itinerary is in Manage booking.

Important details before you fly
Tips for packing your luggage
- Make sure each piece of baggage you’ll be checking in is labelled with your name, address and contact details.
- Keep valuables, including any keys, medications and important documents handy in your carry-on baggage.
- We recommend that you lock your baggage, however, be aware that security screeners may need to inspect your baggage, which could include breaking locks.
- For US travel, use TSA-recognised locks that can be opened without breaking.
- You can use the 'Track my bags' feature in the Qantas App to view the status of your checked baggage on eligible flights operated and marketed by Qantas. Allow extra time if using airport baggage-wrapping services.
- If security wrapping needs to be removed for inspection, it won’t be replaced afterwards.
