Travel checklist

To ensure you have the smoothest journey possible, use our travel checklist to help you prepare for your trip.

Australian domestic travel

From selecting your seat and adding extra baggage, to changing your flight or checking in, you can manage your booking and plan your travel with the Qantas App or online at qantas.com until 30 minutes prior to your departure.

Before departure

Things to do before departure
Seat selection Choose a window, an aisle or the option of more space to stretch out, all before you begin your journey. You can select your seat on Qantas operated flights^ after making a booking.
Baggage Check your carry-on and checked baggage meets the allowances for domestic travel. If you think your bags will exceed our checked baggage allowance, you can pre-purchase additional baggage allowance online for lower rates than at the airport.~
Contact details Make sure you have up to date contact details for all passengers. You can update these via Manage Booking, or by contacting your agent if you booked via a third-party.
Change flight If you need to change your flight, you can do so online via Manage Booking. If your flights were booked through a travel agency or third-party website (for example Webjet or Booking.com), contact these companies directly to discuss your options.
Qantas App With mobile check-in, access to your digital boarding pass or managing your trip, the Qantas App has all your travel needs covered.
Travel insurance There's a range of travel insurance policies to suit different needs, ensure you've organised a policy before your trip.
Travel updates Prior to travel, ensure you check the latest government travel requirements.

Day of Departure

Things to do on day of departure
Excess baggage Above the checked baggage allowance? You can still purchase additional baggage and pay less than at the airport.
Travel documents Ensure you have the documents needed for domestic travel, which include your tickets and photo identification.
Flight status Track real time departure information for your Qantas, QantasLink or codeshare flight before you head to the airport.
Check-in online Check-in online or via the Qantas App from 24 hours and 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. After completing check-in, you'll receive a digital boarding pass which you can use to drop your bags and board your flight.

At the airport

Excess baggage Excess baggage charges apply at the airport for any baggage exceeding your checked baggage allowance. Excess baggage payments can be made by credit card at our self-serve airport kiosks.
Self-service bag drop If you have a Q Bag Tag, you can use this when flying within Australia. After you have completed your check-in using the Qantas App or online, proceed straight to the self-service bag drop (available at select airports) to check your bags. Alternatively, use your digital boarding pass at our self-serve bag tag kiosks to print bag tags for checked baggage.

International travel

Passports

Make sure your passport is arranged well in advance of your departure date, valid for at least 6 months from departure and valid for the duration of your trip.

It's also a good idea to leave a copy of your passport and travel documents with someone at home.

Visas

Check whether you need a visa for each of the countries you'll travel in. Immunisations

Visit the IATA Travel CentreOpens in a new tab or window to check the health requirements for all of the destinations in your trip.

If your pet is staying home while you’re away, you may need to look into a boarding facility or pet sitting. We suggest you contact the RSPCAOpens in a new tab or window in Australia, or an accredited organisation or pet sitter in your country, for more information.

Travel insurance

Ensure you organise a travel insurance policy to suit your needs.

USA, Canada and New Zealand travel requirements

Check your requirements for travel to, from or within the USA including Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) and Secure Flight Information.

Travel documents If you only have electronic copies of any required travel documents, eg e-visas, we recommend you carry a printed copy with you to use throughout your trip, as you may be required to show these at check-in, when boarding and on arrival.

Travel money

Sort your travel money before you go, to ensure you have local currency available on your arrival.

Medications

If you are taking medications, make sure you have enough for your trip, and carry all medications in your carry-on baggage. Read more tips on travelling with medications.

Baggage

Make sure your carry-on and checked baggage meets the requirements including dangerous goods.

You should carry your e-ticket receipt at all times for your international flight and photographic identification must be produced at check-in.
