Details about new programs and technologies in order to reduce our use of energy, water and waste.
We're introducing new programs and technologies to reduce our use of electricity and water, the amount of waste sent to landfill and the impact we have on communities, including:
- the launch of plastic-free packaging for headsets and pyjamas on Qantas Airways aircraft, diverting one metre of plastic per person from landfill on every flight
- completing a major refurbishment of our corporate headquarters in Sydney, which combined with our tri-generation plant, has led to our multiple multi-story buildings increasing from 1.5 star to a 5 star NABERS energy efficiency rating
- adopting LED lighting technology, procuring energy efficient electrical appliances, installing water efficient fixtures, and replacing inefficient cooling towers across our property assets.
These initiatives support our progress to deliver against our targets: 35 per cent reduction in electricity by 2020, 30 per cent reduction in water by 2020, 30 per cent reduction in waste-to-landfill by 2020 (based on 2009 levels). We're on track to deliver against all targets and will be reviewing these targets in FY19 to determine our post 2020 commitments.
We’re working to transform our fleet to provide our customers with new energy technologies. Through our partnership with Tesla, electric vehicle owners can charge their vehicles at Qantas Valet facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

In a world first and Guinness World Record attempt, Tesla’s Model X P100D towed one of our Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
