Proof of COVID-19 vaccination

Ensure you have the right documentation when you're required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to travel on an international flight.

If you’ve been vaccinated in Australia, you must show the Australian Government-issued International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate (ICVC) when checking in at the airport. Your domestic proof of immunisation from Medicare will not be accepted.

When travelling on an international flight, you must be prepared to carry and show valid proof of vaccination (or exemption) when it's a requirement for your trip, or you may be denied boarding or entry. It's your responsibility to know your vaccination status and ensure your vaccination certificate meets the requirements.

If you were vaccinated overseas and do not have an ICVC, you'll need to ensure your vaccination certificate meets the requirements for international travel.

Having a vaccination certificate does not necessarily mean you're considered 'fully vaccinated', as this definition may vary depending on your destination. You'll need to check the latest airline and government travel requirements for each country you're travelling to or transiting through, and ensure your status and documentation meet all requirements that apply to your journey.

Vaccination exemptions

We're not able to process any COVID-19 vaccination exemptions at the airport on your day of departure, therefore you'll need to ensure you submit your request as soon as possible before your flight, but no later than 24 hours before departure. Otherwise you may not be able to board your flight.

See more information on COVID-19 vaccination exemptions and medical clearance.

Showing proof of vaccination

You'll need to ensure you have valid COVID-19 vaccination documentation before you get to the airport. All passengers who are required to be fully vaccinated will need to carry and show proof at check-in when they fly with us.

Paper and digital certificates will be accepted, though they will need to be in English or accompanied by a certified translation. Ensure your certified translation includes the stamp or membership number of a professional translation association, and that the entire certificate is translated, not just part of it.

Getting your International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate

You’ll need to access your International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate from the Australian GovernmentOpens external site before you get to the airport.

The easiest way to get a certificate is by using your Medicare account through myGovOpens external site, or the Express Plus Medicare mobile appOpens external site. If you can’t use these options:

You'll need to have access to your current Australian passport or foreign passport with an Australian visa, and have your vaccinations reported to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) by your vaccination provider.

You can apply for your ICVC after you've had at least one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, so ensure your complete course has been recorded on the AIR before getting your certificate in order to show your full vaccination status.
