Register for School Based Traineeships School based trainee

School-Based Traineeships

We offer two-year school-based traineeships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students in years 11 and 12 across Australia. Traineeships help gain work experience along with an opportunity to complete a nationally accredited qualification.

Trainees work in a range of business areas including corporate administration, customer service, engineering, ground operations, freight, and regional airlines.

While completing year 11 and 12 studies, trainees will:

  • work one day a week with Qantas (additional days in the school holidays),
  • receive an income while learning new skills,
  • achieve a nationally recognised qualification - Certificate II/III qualification (in a relevant discipline), and
  • be supported by their Qantas supervisor, colleagues, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs team.

University Internships

Are you studying an undergraduate degree at University? Would you like to gain some real experience working for Qantas while getting paid?

Our interns work across Australia in a range of business areas including operations, human resources, engineering, sales, finance, and regional airlines. These internships are supported through our Partnership with CareerTrackers.

While studying, interns will:

  • receive an income whilst completing work projects and gaining valuable on-the-job experience,
  • be eligible for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) university credits, and
  • be supported by their Qantas supervisor, colleagues, and the First Nations Engagement team.

Apprenticeship Programs

Our engineering apprenticeships offer an exciting opportunity to become a qualified and highly trained tradesperson, specialising in aircraft maintenance and other trades.

With a number of apprenticeships at our Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth airport maintenance facilities, our apprentices have the chance to train and gain experience in a world class organisation with first class facilities.

The Qantas Graduate Program offers a unique, two-year accelerated career start and development path for recent university graduates. 

To join us you‘ll have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, a credit average in a general or specialist degree, and a demonstrated commitment to extracurricular activities. To succeed, you’ll be resilient with strong communication and analytical skills and be able to establish good working relationships.

The Qantas Graduate Program integrates on-the-job experience, coaching, formal classroom learning, performance planning, and feedback.

The Daramu Network

The Daramu network is for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and their allies across the Qantas Group. First Nations Employment Strategy

Meet our First Nations Engagement Team

The First Nations Engagement Team focuses on providing meaningful careers to our First Nations employees through a focus on cultural learning, development, and leadership opportunities. The First Nation Engagement Team is responsible for delivering the Qantas Group First Nations Employment Strategy. We embed the voices of our First Nations Employees and develop Cultural Capability across the Qantas Group workforce by fostering awareness, understanding and appreciation of First Nations knowledge, cultures, histories and rights.  

Renee Wootton

My name is Renee Wootton. I’m a Tharawal woman, currently working as the Group Manager of First Nations Engagement on Gadigal Country. I love working in this team as I am able to share my culture with our people and customers and amplify the voices of our First Nations employees across the Qantas Group to inform our strategy and make the Qantas Group a more inclusive place to work.

Kingsley Dennison

My name is Kingsley Dennison. I’m a Gamilaroi man, currently employed as a Senior Consultant, First Nations working on Gadigal Country. I love my role at Qantas as I am able to work closely with our people to develop and implement programs to attract and retain the strong First Nations talent across the Qantas Group.

Ebony Williams

My name is Ebony Williams. I am a Proud Wiradjuri woman, currently working as a Senior Consultant with Qantas Group. I am proud of my role at Qantas because it allows me to connect with the community to ensure authentic cultural understanding and participation with the Group. Ultimately through my role, I would love to see more mob employed and participating in Qantas’ growing First Nations work.
