Managing climate risk
We recognise human-induced climate change is a significant issue for the aviation industry. We're committed to supporting the aims of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Our Climate Action Plan (PDF) details our targets:
10% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the fuel mix by 2030,
Average of 1.5% per year fuel efficiency improvements to 2030,
We are focused on driving progress across three pillars:
Operational and fleet efficiency, including waste reduction
- Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and
- Carbon offsets, recognising aviation is a hard-to-abate sector and offsets will have an ongoing role in achieving our goals until alternate direct emissions reduction levers (such as SAF, fuel-efficient fleets, and emerging technologies) become more readily available.
Some of these pillars we can influence independently, others will require action and collaboration within our industry, across sectors, and by policymakers, and some will rely on technology development.

Qantas affirmed its support of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in 2017. Our response to its key pillars can be found in our sustainability report including scenario analysis which considered both transition and physical risks and opportunities for the business under different scenarios and provides a preliminary assessment of the financial implications of these risks. The analysis was based on scenarios aimed at improving our understanding of the risks and opportunities arising from climate change.
