Terms and Conditions - Reward Items

Effective from 20 October 2021

1. Introduction

1.1 These Terms explain how an Eligible Member can request certain items (‘Reward Items’) as redemption options for Qantas Points, and how Qantas can (if it agrees to the request) help pay for those Reward Items on behalf of the Eligible Member.

1.2 At all times, Qantas’s role in connection with the Reward Items is limited to the purchase of those Reward Items on behalf of an Eligible Member, and the Eligible Member is not purchasing any goods or services from Qantas.

1.3 These Terms are intended to inform Eligible Members who request a Reward Item of their rights and obligations. It is the Eligible Member’s responsibility to read and understand them.

1.4 These Terms are effective from the date specified above and may be amended by Qantas from time to time. The current Terms are those available on this page.

1.5 Requests in relation to Reward Items, and the provision of them, are subject to these Terms, and the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Terms and Conditions. To the extent of any inconsistency, these Terms prevail.

Maximum Points Amount’ means the maximum number of Qantas Points to be redeemed by an Eligible Member for a Reward Item, as notified by Qantas from time to time.

Minimum Points Amount’ means the minimum number of Qantas Points to be redeemed by an Eligible Member for a Reward Item, as notified by Qantas from time to time.

Order Form’ means a form specifying the details of a Reward Item, and the number of Qantas Points required to redeem that particular Reward Item;

Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Terms and Conditions’ means the Qantas Frequent Flyer Terms and Conditions;

Reward Item’ means an item redeemed by an Eligible Member under these Terms; and

Vendor’ means the retailer, seller or vendor of the relevant Reward Item, as the case may be.

Defined terms used in these Terms otherwise take their meaning from the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program Terms and Conditions unless otherwise stated.

3. Program Eligibility

3.1 Eligibility for the redemption of a Reward Item is determined by Qantas in its sole discretion.

3.2 Eligible Members will be personally invited by Qantas in writing. Invitations are not transferable to other Members.

3.3 Eligible Members must be members of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program at all relevant times, including the making of a request through an Order Form, through to acceptance of the Reward Item.

4. Redeeming Reward Items

4.1 Subject to these Terms, Eligible Members may make a request to redeem a Reward Item using Qantas Points.

4.2 An Eligible Member must make a request to redeem a Reward Item within the period specified in the Invitation. If no period is specified in the Invitation, the request to redeem the Reward Item must be made within 60 days of receiving an Invitation.

4.3 On receipt of an Invitation, an Eligible Member may request, via the Frequent Flyer Service Centre (or the means specified in the Invitation), that Qantas provide the Reward Item to the Eligible Member as a redemption option. On receipt of such a request, Qantas will notify the Eligible Member of the Qantas Points required to redeem the Reward Item through an Order Form. The relevant number of Qantas Points shall be set by Qantas at its absolute discretion and may vary between Eligible Members, even for the same Reward Item.

4.4 Qantas is not required to accept a request from an Eligible Member that an item be provided as a Reward Item.

4.5 An Eligible Member must complete any proposed Order Form that they receive and return it within seven days of it being sent, unless another period of time is specified. If a proposed Order Form is not returned to Qantas within the applicable period, the proposed Offer Form lapses and the Eligible Member must make a new request.

4.6 If an Eligible Member completes an Order Form and returns it to Qantas, the Eligible Member acknowledges that they are submitting a binding, irrevocable order to Qantas to:

(a) purchase the relevant Reward Item in the name of the Eligible Member;
(b) deduct the relevant number of Qantas Points as specified in the Order Form from the Eligible Member’s Membership Account;
(c) take any steps reasonably necessary to purchase the Reward Item specified in the Order Form; and
(d) incur any additional fees, costs or levies (such as delivery or payment processing costs) which arise in connection with the purchase of the Reward Item and cannot be reasonably avoided. If such additional fees, costs or levies are incurred by Qantas, Qantas will debit Qantas Points from the Eligible Member’s account by converting such fees into Qantas Points by using a rate proportionate to the original number of Qantas Points quoted on an Order Form.

4.7 On receipt of the Order Form, Qantas will use commercially reasonable endeavours to purchase the Reward Item on behalf of the Eligible Member. The Eligible Member acknowledges and agrees that:

(a) the submission of an Order Form does not represent a binding guarantee that Qantas will be able to purchase the Reward Item;
(b) the submission of an Order Form does not create any relationship of agency, employment or partnership;
(c) Qantas does not make any representations about the time in which a Reward Item will be purchased, or delivered, and that the Eligible Member releases the Qantas Group, and its directors, employees, and representatives, from any liability whatsoever for any losses, damages or costs which may arise in connection with delay or non-delivery of a Reward Item, even if the Eligible Member has communicated such timings to Qantas; and
(d) Qantas is not liable for any delays, acts or omissions of the Vendors of Reward Items, or any resulting liability from the use of the Reward items themselves, and the Eligible Member further acknowledges and agrees that Qantas’ role is only to attend to payment of the relevant Reward Item on the Eligible Member’s behalf.

5. Limitations in relation to Reward Items

5.1 Qantas may, in its absolute discretion, and at any time, refuse to honour or cancel a request for a Reward Item as specified in an Order Form (even after receipt of an Order Form and any subsequent confirmation) for any reason, and the Eligible Member releases Qantas (and its related bodies corporate, directors, employees, and representatives) from any liability whatsoever for any losses or damages which may arise in connection with such a refusal to complete an order as specified in an Order Form.

5.2 If Qantas cancels a request for a Reward Item as specified in an Order Form, it will reinstate any Qantas Points deducted in connection with that Reward Item to the Eligible Member’s account.

5.3 Qantas may set Minimum Points Amounts and Maximum Points Amounts in connection with any Reward Item, such limits to be notified to Eligible Members from time to time. The Eligible Member acknowledges and agrees that Minimum Points Amounts and Maximum Points Amounts can be changed by Qantas at any time.

5.4 Only one Reward Item can be redeemed in an Order Form.

5.5 The Eligible Member acknowledges and agrees that Qantas may, any time, impose any conditions or prohibitions in connection with a request for a Reward Item, if such prohibitions are, in the opinion of Qantas, required to ensure that the purchase of the Reward Item on the Eligible Member’s behalf does not impose commercially onerous or unreasonable demands on Qantas.

5.6 The Minimum Points Amount cannot be divided across separate purchases or transactions.

5.7 Qantas reserves an absolute discretion to determine the class of items which may constitute Reward Items. Eligible Members acknowledge and agree that Reward Items are generally intended to be retail items such as fashion, electronics, appliances, homewares  or luxury goods.

5.8 Qantas will not honour requests for Reward Items, where the items are:

(a) illegal, constitute safety hazards, create any risk or danger for any persons, or where their purchase may bring Qantas into disrepute;
(b) services - any duty or labour performed by company or an individual including but not limited to professional services (accounting, legal advisory, consultancy), construction, home improvement, medical procedures;
(c) any travel product including but not limited to airfares; accommodation, cruises; land tours, package holidays;
(d) gift cards;
(e) financial products or monetary instruments including but not limited to, shares, bonds, currencies or other investments;
(f) any reward product offered by Qantas including but not limited to merchandise on Qantas Store, Qantas Hotels, Qantas Wine; or
(g) any other product that Qantas deems unacceptable, in its absolute discretion.

5.9 Reward Items must be acquired in the name of the Eligible Member, and not any other party.

5.10 Reward Items must originate from within Australia and may not be shipped from overseas.

5.11 Qantas is not required to honour any request for an Eligible Rewards outside these Terms, including where the relevant item has been purchased (or a binding agreement has been entered into) before Qantas has provided an Order Form.

5.12 Reward Items must be able to be purchased by Qantas by credit card payment. Eligible Reward Items may only be purchased by Qantas where the Vendor can accept credit card payment and where the Vendor has a registered ABN, is based in Australia and must have either an online or bricks and mortar presence in Australia.

5.13 If Qantas is purchasing a Reward Item for an Eligible Member via an online website or retailer, the product and price must be one that is publicly available. Qantas will not login or use an Eligible Member’s credentials to obtain a discount or a preferred price.

5.14 If Qantas is purchasing a Reward Item for an Eligible Member via an online website or retailer and an invoice is provided directly to the Eligible Member via email, the Eligible Member must send a copy of this invoice to Qantas.

5.15 The Eligible Member acknowledges and agrees that:

(a) Qantas’ involvement in the redemption of a Reward Item is limited to payment of the relevant Reward Item on the Eligible Member’s behalf. The Eligible Member;
(b) The Eligible Member is responsible for making all relevant arrangements for the delivery or acceptance of the Reward Item;
(c) Qantas is not liable for any losses or damages arising from the use of, or delivery of, the Reward Item, and the Eligible Member releases Qantas and its related bodies corporate, directors, employees, and representatives) from any liability whatsoever for any losses, damages or costs which may arise in connection with the use or ownership of the Reward Item.

6. Damaged or faulty Reward Items

6.1 Qantas is not the relevant retailer or manufacturer of the relevant Reward Item redeemed by an Eligible Member under these Terms. The Eligible Member must liaise directly with the manufacturer or retailer of the relevant Reward Item in relation to any returns, complaints, queries or defects in relation to the Reward Item.

6.2 The Eligible Member is responsible for attending to any exchanges or returns, at their cost, directly with the retailer or manufacturer of the Reward Item.

6.3 If an Eligible Member exchanges a Reward Item with a Vendor and a cash difference is due to the Eligible Member, the Eligible Member is responsible for contacting Qantas to arrange Qantas to be credited this cash difference by the Vendor. The Vendor must provide a receipt for this credit with the amount to be credited.  Qantas will then arrange to credit the equivalent number of Qantas Points to the Eligible Member at the same value as the time of the original transaction, less any service fees, charges or restocking fees imposed by the Vendor, such reductions to be made on a pro-rata basis.

6.4 If an Eligible Member returns a Reward Item to a Vendor, the Eligible Member is responsible for contacting Qantas to arrange Qantas to be refunded the value of the Reward Item being returned. The Vendor must provide a receipt for this  return and the amount to be refunded. Qantas will then arrange to credit back the Eligible Member the equivalent number of Qantas Points at the same value as the time of the original transaction less any deductions made for: wear and tear, damage or service fees, or charges or restocking fees imposed by the Vendor, such reductions to be made on a pro-rata basis.

7. Liability

7.1 To the maximum extent permitted by law in any applicable jurisdiction, Qantas expressly disclaims any and all guarantees, conditions, warranties and liabilities (including for consequential damages) with respect to type, quality, standard, fitness or suitability for any purpose of any Reward Item.

7.2 To the maximum extent permitted by law in any applicable jurisdiction, Qantas is not liable to Eligible Members or any other person in connection with the use or redemption of a Reward Item, including any liability whatsoever for any death, injury, loss of or damage to data, loss of production or operating time, loss of actual or anticipated savings, economic loss, damage to reputation, or any type of damages, however caused and whether arising under contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise.

7.3 Qantas does not offer any advice to, nor accept any taxation liability of Eligible Members or their employers arising from or in connection with any Reward Item redeemed under these Terms. Eligible Members should note that certain redemption transactions may have tax implications. Qantas recommends that Eligible Members consult their accountant or tax adviser to ensure that they understand possible tax (including fringe benefits tax) implications, if any, related to the redemption of a Reward Item.
