When to visit
The best time to visit Hamburg is in summer (June to August), with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 22°C when the city really shines. There are plenty of parks, outdoor pools and beaches in and around the city. Beach clubs open their doors along the Elbe River, cool down with a gelato or visit an open-air cinema. In winter, you can see the Christmas markets and parades, though temperatures are chilly dropping to 1°C and 4°C between December and February.

Hamburg Airport (HAM)Opens external site in a new window. Known in German as Flughafen Hamburg, is a major international airport in Hamburg, Germany. The airport is located 8.5 km north of the city centre in the Fuhlsbüttel quarter.
Arriving in Hamburg
When your flight arrives on Hamburg you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start.
Getting into Hamburg from Hamburg Airport
For a relaxed start to get into Hamburg from the airport choose from train, bus, taxi, shuttle services, car rental, car sharing or Uber. Travelling by train is an efficient way to reach Hamburg from the airport. The S-Bahn line S1 takes you from the airport to Hamburg Central Station, with services every 10 minutes and a journey time of only 25 minutes. If you would like to use the bus for your journey, there are stops directly in front of Terminal 1 on Level 0 (arrival) or you can book a shuttle service for a private way to travel to your destination. By taxi, the approximate travel time to Hamburg city centre is around 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis stands are located out the front of Terminal 1 and 2, or you may like to request and Uber. You can rent a car or use the car sharing service located at Terminal 2.
Getting around Hamburg
Getting around Hamburg is easy with public transport, taxi, ferry, Uber, car sharing and bicycles popular ways to get around. If you are keen to explore Hamburg by train, the network will get you to anywhere in the city and to the most beautiful sights around Hamburg. The S- Bahn and U-Bahn are the train services that operate throughout the city and connect to other cities in the region. Ferries serve the harbour and the River Elbe, all stop at Landungsbrücken. Hop on and off the red double decker bus or join one of the many bus tours to see the sights. It's best to buy a Hamburg card for unlimited travel on public transport. Taxi companies operate within the city that can be hailed from the street or from one of the taxi stands, alternatively you may wish to book an Uber. Join a city cycling tour or hire a bike to explore the town or go at your own pace and explore Hamburg on foot.
