Visiting from Townsville to Weipa

When to visit

The best time to go to Weipa is between July and August, when the dry season kicks in the weather is cool and sunny and gets very busy with visitors. Between November to April is the wet season, it’s very hot and thunderstorms start building in late afternoons and evenings. It also floods, making it a very wet visit, though good for fishing — but look out for crocodiles.

Weipa Airport (WEI) serves Weipa, the largest town on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. The airport is located 13 km (8 miles) from town centre.

The helpful staff at Weipa Aiport will greet you when you land. From there is easy to make the 13km trip to the city centre. 

Getting into Weipa from Weipa Airport

It’s easy to make the short trip to Weipa from Weipa Airport, it’s located approximately 10 minutes’ drive from the town centre. Hire cars and taxis are available at the terminal. 

Getting around Weipa

Taxis service the city or rent a bike. Explore the wider Cape York Peninsula by hire car, but check with the Western Cape Cultural Centre site to plan your route before heading off as road closures during the wet season are common.
