Osaka travel information

Osaka is Japan's second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo. It has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region for many centuries. With many famous attractions to see, it no wonder it’s a top destination in Japan to explore. Be sure to visit the Sumiyoshi Taisha shine, Osaka Castle and Shitennoji Temple, one of the oldest temples in Japan. To eat plan a visit to Kuromon Market - a popular market street for seafood and produce. Osaka is famous for local dishes including Takoyaki (grilled octopus), okonomiyaki and udon. Osaka is known for world class shopping districts, many museums and art galleries. There is something for everyone in Osaka.

When to visit

Best time to visit Osaka

The most popular time to visit Osaka is in Spring (March and April) to view the famous cherry blossoms in full bloom. Some popular spots are the Kema Sakuranomiya Park and Osaka Castle. Temperatures range from 9°C- 19°C. Autumn (October and November) is also a good time to visit to experience the colours of the trees with pleasant temperatures. Summer (June to August) in Osaka is hot and humid, though there area beaches to cool off, festivals and fireworks. Temperatures range from 23°C to 28°C during summer. If you plan to visit in winter (December to March) you’ll experience the amazing dazzling winter lights, Japanese New Year festivals or one of the many ski resorts. Temperatures average around 10°C.

What is the main airport called?

Osaka International Airport (ITM).Opens external site in a new window Often referred to as Itami Airport is the primary regional airport for the Kansai region of Japan, including the major cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. It is the airport closest to Kyoto, 36 kilometres southwest of Kyoto Station. The airport is located about 10 km (6 miles) from Osaka city centre.

Arriving in Osaka

The helpful staff at Osaka International Airport will greet you when you arrive. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Osaka from Osaka International Airport

Getting into Kyoto and surround districts from Osaka International Airport is easy, with many transport options available. The quickest way is to take the train at Osaka Airport Station to Hotarugaike Station, where travellers can buy tickets to Umeda Station or Kyoto. The journey to Umeda takes about 20 minutes, and the ride to Kyoto is about 45 minutes. Buses are available to Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka and Chugoku with a regular timetable available. If you wish to take a taxi from the airport, follow the directions in the 2F arrival lobby of the central terminal building. Car rental and motorcycle rental services are available from the Osaka International Airport terminal. Vehicle rentals are highly convenient for sightseeing and located at the 1F north terminal building. Car parking is available at the airport, along with private transfers and group tour buses.

Getting around Osaka

The easiest way to travel around Osaka is by subway or train. Visiting the top Osaka attractions, you’re rarely far from a subway stop or a train station. There are other modes of transport too, including buses, taxis, and even river cruises. Transport in Osaka is mainly by the subway system and the metro is by far the best way of getting around with trains always on time. It’s best to buy a travel pass. Tram and the Umegle bus services are available to explore the city centre. Taxis are easy to hail and cycling is a great way to get around with many parks and cycle lanes. A river cruise through Osaka takes you past many points of interest in the city.

Baggage allowance

Passengers on Qantas flights from Sydney are allocated checked baggage. If you require extra luggage, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online before departure. 

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Sydney can check in online up to 24 hours in advance or check in at the terminal by visiting a kiosk or desk.

Can I cancel my flight booking due to COVID-19?

If your flights were booked through a travel agency or third-party website, please contact them directly to discuss your options.

If we’ve cancelled your Qantas flight, including your Classic Flight Reward booking, wait to hear from us before changing your booking. We’ll be contacting anyone whose flight has been impacted as soon as possible.
