Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe is one of the most attractive capitals in South Africa. It's a safe city, with a laid-back feel and a wide variety of dining options, museums, bars and craft markets. Known as the Sunshine City, the avenues are lined with dusty red earth, local plants and blooming jacarandas. It's the perfect base to spend a few days before your safari. 

When to visit

The best time to visit Harare is from May to September with warm weather and little rain making it a good time to see the sights, parks and wildlife. Temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C. It does get cool at night and in the morning, so it's best to pack warm clothes. November to March (summer) is the wet season, its humid and some roads can be closed, though it’s a popular time for bird-watching.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE). Formerly known as the Harare International Airport, is an international airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. It is located 15 kilometres south of Harare city, the capital of Zimbabwe, South Africa. 

Arriving in Harare

The staff at Harare Airport will greet you when you land and assist you with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.         

Getting into Harare from Harare Airport

Getting into Harare from the airport is easy with various transport options to suit your travel needs. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall and are a comfortable way to travel. The travel time to the city centre is around 25 minutes. Shuttle buses are also convenient option to get to your destination, especially if you're travelling in a group. Hotel transfers are a safe way to get to your destination, check with your hotel before arriving. Car hire is available, though it's best to organise a car with a driver for safety reasons. 

Getting around Harare  

To see most of the sights and National Parks in Harare, the most popular method is to join a guided a tour. Alternatively, you can travel on private coaches and buses for a reliable mode of transport. If you're travelling between cities in Zimbabwe consider hiring a shuttle company to transport you. Taxis are available in Harare and it's best to book one in advance over the phone or through your hotel. It’s possible to rent a car, so you can see the sights at your own pace or rent a car with a driver to get a guided tour. Trains operate in Zimbabwe and it’s a cheap option of your travelling to another destination for example Harare to Bulawayo. If you're staying at a safari camp or hotel, most hotels have shuttle services to take you to where you need to go.
