Whichever season you decide to visit, there's always something to do in Detroit. The weather in Detroit varies from season to season, but easily changes quickly. Generally, the hottest months are June through August, making Summer a great time to visit to experience blue skies and sunshine. Summer temperatures range from -13ºC to 29 ºC. Autumn colours are a spectacular in late September and October. Winter weather can range from rain, sleet and snow on any given day. The annual average snowfall is 102 cm with temperatures ranging from -10 ºC to 2 ºC. During the cooler weather it’s the perfect time to see the Henry Ford Museum and Detroit Opera House.

It is the primary international airport serving Detroit and is Michigan's busiest airport. DTW Airport is located 28km southwest of downtown Detroit, in Romulus, Michigan.

Getting into downtown Detroit from Detroit Airport

There are many transport options to make your trip to and from Detroit Airport easy. The most popular way is to arrange your trip via ridesharing apps. To transfer between terminals there is a free terminal-to-terminal shuttle service between the McNamara and North terminal. If traveling by public transportation, SMART and AirRide provide service to and from Detroit Metro Airport. Rental cars give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Once you've claimed your baggage, follow signs to Ground Transportation and take a courtesy shuttle to the rental car campus. Taxi and luxury sedan services dispatch from the upper level of the Ground Transportation Centre to take you to downtown. Shuttle services are also available and best booked in advance.

There are many modes of transport to get around Detroit. With plenty of parking available, it’s popular to hire a car to explore Detroit’s most popular neighbourhoods including Downtown, Corktown, Eastern Market, Midtown and more. The light-rail, Detroit People Move can help you get around downtown quick, easily and safely. Bike share, taxi, ride share, bus and shuttle services are also available for an affordable way to see the sights. Amtrak is Detriot’s train service or you may wish to hire a scooter to get across town quickly.

Passengers on Qantas flights from Sydney are allocated checked baggage. If you require extra luggage, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online before departure. 

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Sydney can check in online up to 24 hours in advance or check in at the terminal by visiting a kiosk or desk.

Can I cancel my flight booking due to COVID-19?

If your flights were booked through a travel agency or third-party website, please contact them directly to discuss your options.

If we’ve cancelled your Qantas flight, including your Classic Flight Reward booking, wait to hear from us before changing your booking. We’ll be contacting anyone whose flight has been impacted as soon as possible.

 This offer applies to Qantas operated flights for the following dates: Australian Domestic: booked between 21 May 2020 and 28 February 2022, for travel between 12 June 2020 and 28 February 2022. Trans-Tasman: booked between 15 October 2020 and 28 February 2022, for travel between 16 October 2020 and 28 February 2022. If you decide to change the date of your travel, we'll waive the change fee.
