When to visit

Best time to visit Ballina - Byron Bay

With its warm climate and boasting plenty of sunshine, Byron is a great place to visit any time of year. Visit from September to November to enjoy sunny days and lower than average rainfall. Byron’s famed festival season runs from April to June and the best surfing can be enjoyed from April to September due to low pressure in the Tasman Sea.

Sydney Airport. Located 9 km (5.5 miles) south of the Sydney CBD, in Mascot, Sydney AirportOpens external site (SYD) has three terminals: T1 - Sydney international airport (Qantas flights QF1-QF399, oneworld flights and Jetstar international flights), T2 - Sydney domestic airport (Jetstar domestic flights) and T3 - Sydney domestic airport (Qantas Domestic flights QF400 to QF1599 and QantasLink flights QF1600 and above). 

Baggage allowance

Passengers on Qantas flights from Sydney to Ballina are allocated checked baggage. If you require extra luggage, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online before departure. 

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Sydney to Ballina can check in online up to 24 hours in advance or check in at the terminal by visiting a kiosk or desk.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport. Ballina Byron Gateway AirportOpens external site is located just five minutes from Ballina CBD and less than 30 minutes to Byron Bay and Lismore. The airport is serviced by taxis, shuttles, rideshare vehicles and hire cars.

Arriving in Byron Bay

After the friendly staff at Ballina Airport greet you on arrival, there are a few easy options to get into Byron. 

Getting into Byron from Ballina (Byron) Airport

The easiest way is to pre-book a shuttle, such as Easy Bus for a seamless ride into your accommodation. Another option is to book a hire car at the airport to explore the area such as Wategos’s Beach or Bangalow markets at your leisure. Alternatively, you may wish to fly to Gold Coast Airport, which is around a 1-hour drive. Taxis are also available to get you to Byron.

Getting around Ballina (Byron)

There are so many activities to see and do in Byron and the easiest way to get around town is on foot. Another great transport option is to hire a bike from one of the hotels or bike hire shops, for a fun way to cycle along the footpaths. Car hire, Uber, tours and shuttle services are also a popular way to get around Byron and explore the sites. You may also wish to hire a kayak to paddle in the Pacific Ocean to spot dolphins.
