Best time to visit Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island’s climate is mild, year-round. The most popular time to visit Lord Howe is between September and May with pleasant temperatures of 21°C and 22°C in the water. Popular activities include; snorkelling, swimming, diving, hiking, glass bottom boat trips, North Bay adventures, Mt Gower hike, bird watching, and walking. The winter months (June, July and August), the days can be sunny and warm. The daytime temperatures are around 19°C, and 13°C at night.

Getting into Lord Howe Island from Lord Howe Island Airport

Lord Howe Island airport is surrounded by the World Heritage listed Marine Park. On arrival all accommodation properties meet flights, providing free transport for arriving and departing guests, making it a convenient way to start your holiday. There are a limited number of rental cars available on the island. 

Getting around Lord Howe Island

Getting around on Lord Howe Island is very easy and does not need public transport. Everything is within walking distance and bike hire is available through Thompson’s General Store. A car is generally not necessary for visitors, with small bus tours available to book.

What is the main airport called?

Port Macquarie AirportOpens external site in a new window is located five kilometres west of the Port Macquarie CBD, off Hastings River Drive on Boundary Street. The airport on the northerneasten coast of NSW, is owned and managed by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Terminal facilities include an Airport Café and Bar, a cash machine, and car rental counters.

Baggage allowance

Passengers on Qantas flights from Port Macquarie are allocated a baggage allowance. If you need extra luggage for your trip, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online prior to departure.

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Port Macquarie, ensure you check-in online or via the Qantas App before you arrive at the airport from 24 hours before departure.
