Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It has a great blend of Spanish, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures, giving the city an international atmosphere. Porto Alegre is a wealthy city, with good shopping spots, excellent restaurants and exciting bars. The port city is an essential part of Brazilian culture and has lively music scene. Be sure to stroll along the huge freshwater Lagoa dos Patos, and watch an amazing sunset, visit the city’s fabulous parks, such as Parque Moinhos de Ven, pop into the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral and relax at one of the many bars in Moinhos de Vento. It's a lively city with plenty to enjoy, including tasting one of the most famous foods of Brazil, churrasco (slow roasted meat).

When to visit

Porto Alegre has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter), quite different from northern Brazilian regions. The summer months from November to the end of April are the hottest and driest of the year, with an average temperature around 30 °C. It’s a lovely time to sail on the Guaíba River and enjoy the sunsets. March to May (autumn) and October to November (spring) are other popular times to visit when the temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 26°C to 28°C.

Getting into Porto Alegre from Porto Alegre Airport

Getting into downtown Porto Alegre is easy, with a range of transport options to suit your needs. Choose from public transport, taxi, ride share, hotel transfers or car rental. There are several bus services available from Porto Alegre Airport. EMTU offers routes to different city locations destinations as Gramado and Canela from the second floor of terminal 1. By train, the Trensurb train will take you into the city centre in 12 minutes. Taxi is a convenient option with ranks located on the first floor of both terminals and the journey time to the city centre is 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, you may like to request a car through the Uber app to get to your destination. If you prefer a private way to travel, it’s possible to pre-book a transfer to your hotel or to the city. If you wish to explore more of Porto Alegre, you can rent a car at the airport from the arrivals area. 

Getting around Porto Alegre

Public transport, taxis, cycling, ride-share, walking and tours are various options to get around Porto Alegre. The Trensurb train is the most convenient form of public transport in town, with stations throughout the city. Buses are another option, with an extensive network to take you to where you need to go. Taxis are a convenient option, most drivers speak only Portuguese, so it’s best to have your destination written down in English or you may wish to request an Uber for a safe way to travel. Cycling is a popular way to get around, with a network of dedicated bike lanes in the city and it’s easy to hire a bike from one of the many bike stations. You may wish to join a guided tour to see the city sights or rent a car.

Perth Airport. Located 15 km (9 miles) from the city centre, Perth Airport (PER) is the busiest and largest airport in Western Australia. All Qantas operated flights (international and domestic) operate from Terminal 3 and 4 (T3/T4) precinct.

 Passengers on Qantas flights from Perth are allocated checked baggage. If you need more luggage, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online prior to departure.
