History is everywhere in Copenhagen where cobblestone streets, palaces and royal artefacts make for a beautiful holiday. Be sure to visit Amalienborg Palace (home to the Royal family), the UNESCO listed Kronborg Castle, cycle along the many bike paths and bridges and enjoy the Danish cuisine. There's no question, Copenhagen is stunning place to explore.

When to visit

Denmark has four distinct seasons. The spring months, April to May, are the mildest, while the summer months of June, July and August are the hottest. Autumn, from September to November  tends to be rainy and more overcast. Winter runs from December to March and is normally cold, with frost and snow. February is the coldest month around 0˚C. The best time to visit Copenhagen is summer to enjoy the coastline, swimming and cycle along harbour. The sun rises at 4:30am and sets at 10pm, with plenty of hours of daylight. The temperatures average around 16˚C and it is still warm enough to swim.

Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup (CPH).Opens external site in a new window It is the main international airport serving Copenhagen, Denmark. The airport is located on the island of Amager, 8 km south of Copenhagen city centre. 

Arriving in Copenhagen

When your flight arrives in Copenhagen, you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start. 

Getting into Copenhagen from Copenhagen Airport  

Getting into Copenhagen is easy, with a range of transport options to suit your needs. Choose from bus, train, metro, taxi, hotel transfers or car rental. There are several bus lines to the centre of Copenhagen. Take the yellow and red Movia buses to get to the city centre and many more places throughout Copenhagen. The airport also provides a free terminal bus service, which runs between the terminals around the clock. The bus terminal is located outside terminal 2 and 3. By metro, the station is located at the end of terminal 3 and runs at regular intervals and is a fast way to get to the city. The M2 line (yellow line) takes just 15 minutes to Nørreport Station. Train is an efficient option, with trains leaving the airport every 10 minutes and the journey to Copenhagen Central Station takes approximately 20 minutes.  Taxi is a convenient option with a trip time of 20 minutes to the city, or you can take a taxi to Sweden. The taxi stand is located outside terminals 2 and 3. It's possible to rent a car from the airport, to explore more of the city.

Getting around Copenhagen

Getting around in Copenhagen is easy, with various handy transport options available. From public transport, taxis, bike rentals, e-scooters and cruises, you can get to anywhere you want to go. The public transport network of Copenhagen is very efficient, inexpensive, easy to use and reliable. You can pay per journey in cash at a machine in a metro or train station or in person on a bus. The Copenhagen Card gives you unlimited public transport in the capital region of Denmark plus free entry to over 80 museums and attractions or you can buy a city pass to use over 3 days. Copenhagen has four metro lines, the Circle Line (or “Cityringen” in Danish) connects the neighbourhoods of Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro, Østerbro and the city centre. The metros depart every 3 minutes making it easy to get to where to where you want to go. You can travel by train in Copenhagen and beyond to the rest of Denmark or to Sweden. The harbour bus boat runs in both directions from Teglholm in the south to Refshaleøen in the north. It is a great way to see the city from the water and an efficient way to get from Nyhavn to Reffen in the summer. Copenhagen's City Bike project, Bycyklen, is a network of electric bikes all over the city that you can rent from the street. Or you can rent a bike from a local bike shop. You can travel by coach with extensive routes, take a ferry or join a tour for a refreshing way to travel. It's possible to rent a car, though with excellent public transport, you may not need to.
