Montevideo is a vibrant city in Uruguay, rich in culture, history, shopping malls, music, fine wine and excellent steak. Explore the old colonial city, wander along the port, visit beachfront neighbourhoods such as Punta Carretas and enjoy the arts, from music in little tango bars or elegant old theatres. The city in South America has many hidden gems to explore.

When to visit

The best time to visit Montevideo is from October to March. During this time, the city experiences the warmest weather of the year and carnival celebrations fill the streets with music, singing and dancing beginning in January. Temperatures in summer (November to February) average around 26°C. Spring (April to May) is also another popular time to visit to go snorkelling and visit the beaches, temperatures range around 20°C.

The staff at Montevideo Airport will greet you when you land and assist with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.         

Getting into Montevideo from Montevideo Airport

Getting into Montevideo from the airport is easy with various transport options to suit your travel needs. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall and are a comfortable way to travel. The travel time to Montevideo city centre is around 25 minutes and taxis are metered. Uber operates from the airport and is a handy way to travel to your destination, just book your ride through the app. It's also possible to share a ride with Uber to reduce the cost of your trip through the Uber app. Multiple buses serve the airport and connect to Montevideo city and other major cities in Uruguay, or you can book a private minibus if you're travelling in a group. It’s a good idea to rent a car with multiple car hire providers available at the airport to explore the city at your leisure. 

Getting around Montevideo

The most popular way to get around Montevideo is by bus, as this is the only form of public transport. However, within the city, like the narrow alleyways of Cuidad Vieja and the wide curving Rambla, are best seen by walking or hiring a bike. Taxis are plentiful, clean and easy to catch from either the street or booking through the Cabify app. Uber is a handy way to travel to take you to where you want to go, just install the app. The flat roads and extensive bike lanes make Montevideo an ideal city for cycling. Many hotels have their own bike rental programs, otherwise Orange Bike is a popular bike rental option. The hop on- hop off bus is a popular way to see the sights and shopping areas.
