Fukuoka is a modern city located on the northern coast of Kyushu, Japan. It's Japan's third largest island, rich in ancient culture and stunning natural beauty. There are two centres in the city, Hakata and Tenjin divided by the River Naka, with Hakata serving as a commercial and port centre.  Popular attractions in Fukuoka are Fukuoka Castle, Sumiyoshi-jinja Shrine, Shiraito Falls and Kyushu National Museum. The best time to visit Fukuoka is in spring between March and May, when its warm and sunny. It's also cherry blossom season, so it’s a great time to see cherry blossoms in full bloom during March and late April. Popular spots to view the cherry blossoms in Fukuoka are in Nishi Park, Hosshin Park, and the Kurume Castle Ruins. The average temperature during the spring season is around 15°C to 19°C. Summers are hot and humid from June to September with some thunderstorms. Autumn is also a popular time to visit to see the autumn leaves and enjoy outdoor activities. Temperatures range around 23°C.

Fukuoka International Airport (FUK)Opens in a new tab or window. It is the main gateway to Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu, Japan. It's located 3km east of Hakata city. The airport has both an international and domestic terminal.

Arriving in Fukuoka

The helpful staff at Fukuoka International Airport will greet you when you land and assist you with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.         

Getting into Fukuoka from Fukuoka Airport

Getting into Fukuoka city from Fukuoka Airport is easy, with various transport options available. A convenient way to travel is to take a taxi which takes about 15 minutes to the city centre. Multiple taxi stands are available outside the terminals. The airport is well connected to the city by subway, with stations at both the domestic and international terminals. The subway is the quickest way, taking only 10 minutes. Local buses are available at the airport and travel to many destinations over Kyushu. It’s possible to rent a car from the airport information centre, to explore the island at your own pace.

Getting around Fukuoka

Travelling within Fukuoka is convenient to use public transport, with trains, subways and buses available. It’s best to buy a prepaid transport card to use on all modes of public transport. It’s a good idea to buy a Fukuoka Tourist City pass to use on all trains, subways and buses, along with free or discounted admission to famous tourist sites. These can be purchased at information desks at Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport and ticket offices in the city. Other ways to get around are ferry, buses, motorcycle, walking or renting a bike.
