Roma travel information

Roma, Queensland is an outback town located one hour’s flight west of Brisbane. The best way to explore it is to begin at Roma’s Historic Walk. An easy, two-kilometre walk takes you to 25 places of interest across the town. From local churches and hotels, to The Big Rig and the 3D Mural; it’s a great introduction to the town.

As the first place in Australia where natural gas was found, it remains the gas and oil industries are still important to Roma today. Visit The Big Rig and The Oil Patch Outdoor Museum, to get an learn more about the history of the industries in Australia.

When to visit

Best time to visit Roma

Summer in Roma sees average daily temperatures soar to around 34°C. Autumn and spring in Roma are both quite warm, with average daily highs of 28°C. Winter in Roma is quite mild, with daily temperatures sitting at around 20°C. The best time to visit Roma is between March and October, when the outback town experiences the least amount of rainfall.

After the friendly staff at Roma Aiport greet you on arrival, there are a few easy options to get into town.

Getting into Roma from Roma Airport

Roma Airport is located approximately seven kilometres from the town centre off the Carnarvon Highway. Rental car companies operate in the terminal and taxi services are also available.

Getting around Roma

The best way to get around Roma is to hire a car to explore the outback town at your own pace. Alternatively, you may wish to hire a 4WD to set out on a self-guided tour of the region. Bus Queensland also operates services between Roma and other Outback Queensland cities.
