Visiting from Canberra to Yangon

monks

The one-time capital of Myanmar, Yangon is still a cultural and commercial hub. There are many cultural sites to explore and there’s a chance to get a glimpse of authentic Burmese urban culture. Best known for the 300-foot-tall gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon is also home to fantastically huge Buddha statues, beautiful lakeside parks and bustling markets. Whether you're looking to shop for unique handicrafts, visit history museums or try new food, you won't leave Yangon disappointed.

When to visit

As with much of Southeast Asia, winter months are the best time to visit Yangon as they are not too hot like summer or wet like the monsoon season. The best time to visit Myanmar (Burma) is during December, January, and February - the cooler months at the start of the dry season. Temperatures are comfortable with average highs of about 30°C. Nights during the dry season are chilly, normally around 15°C. The wet season runs from June to October, and it’s not the best time to visit as most of the beach resorts are closed.

Getting into Yangon from Yangon Airport

Getting into Yangon from the airport is easy, thanks to the wide range of different transport options available. Choose from taxi, hotel shuttle, airport bus or car rental. Taxi is a convenient option and it takes about an hour to get to the city centre. Plenty of taxis are located at the arrivals hall in each terminal, with friendly staff to assist. You may wish to organise a hotel shuttle or private transfer to get you to your accommodation. Car hire is available and it’s best to pre book in advance.

Getting around Yangon

Getting around Yangon is easy with a variety of transport options available to discover the city. Taxis are everywhere in Yangon, and they are often the easiest way to get around the city. While not metered, bargaining is not difficult. Alternatively, you may wish to book an Uber through the app, which is helpful if you don’t speak Burmese. Yangon's bus system is extensive and very complicated. For tourists, this can be tricky as few locals speak or understand English. Drivers will try to help you if you announce your destination and one of the central bus stations in town, the Parami Bus Station, is a good place to hop on. For travellers it's best not to hire a car, though you may like to hire one with a driver.
