Byron Bay’s mild, temperate climate makes it a perfect place to holiday year round. With sunny days and warm temperatures common for most of the year, Byron Bay is the ideal beach holiday destination. Spring in Byron Bay (Sep-Nov) is a premium time to visit with smaller crowds and the days growing longer and warmer. It also has the lowest average rainfall, making it a great pre-summer break. Summer in Byron Bay (Dec-Feb) has the hottest days (average around 27 ºC), the evenings often have showers, cooling the temperature down. The ocean is warm and perfect for days on the beach, though it is busy with school holidays.

When your flight arrives at Ballina Airport, you’ll be welcomed by the friendly staff at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport ready to get your holiday underway. The town of Byron Bay is 38km from Ballina Airport, taking about a 40-minute drive from the airport.

Once you collect your bags from the baggage carousel, there are multiple different transport options available to get you to town. This airport is small, but you will find two ATMs, a visitor information desk, payphones, a café and free WiFi.

Getting into Byron Bay

Hire cars or taxis are not available at the terminal, but contact your chosen accommodation provider in advance, and many will offer an airport transfer to your place of stay in Barcaldine. Alternatively, you may wish to rent a car and drive.

Getting around Byron Bay

There are so many activities to see and do in Byron and the easiest way to get around town is on foot. Another great transport option is to hire a bike from one of the hotels or bike hire shops, for a fun way to cycle along the footpaths. Car hire, Uber, tours and shuttle services are also a popular way to get around Byron and explore the sites.  You may also wish to hire a kayak to paddle in the Pacific Ocean to spot dolphins.

Qantas flights QF400 and above operate from this terminal.

Baggage allowance

Passengers on Qantas flights from Canberra are allocated a baggage allowance. If you require extra luggage for your trip, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online prior to departure.

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Canberra, ensure you check-in online or via the Qantas App before you arrive at the airport from 24 hours before departure.
