Whether you love the sun or the snow, Chicago buzzes with activities and events every month of the year. Spring in Chicago means flowers in bloom, warm weather, and buzzing activity in the parks and along the lake. Temperatures typically range between 10 – 21°C. In the summer, the city is alive and packed with festivals and special events. This is patio season, with bars and restaurants spilling out onto scenic rooftops. Temperatures average around 26°C – 33°C. Fall is windy and winters in Chicago bring picturesque snow, magical light displays, and unique holiday traditions with temperatures dropping to -1°C – 3°C.

It lies just 16 miles from downtown Chicago and boasts four terminals — three domestic (Terminals 1, 2 and 3) and one international (Terminal 5).

Arriving in Chicago

The helpful and friendly staff at Chicago Airport will be waiting to greet you when you land. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are a number of different transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Chicago from Chicago Airport

There are many transport options to make your trip to Chicago from ORD easy and stress free. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line ‘L’ Train, which runs 24/7, connects directly to the city from O’Hare Airport. Taxi, Lyft, and Uber are available at the terminal. GO Airport Express provides shared ride services to Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Numerous car rental companies are available at the airports or alternatively book a limousine and chauffeur services for your stay in Chicago.

Getting around Chicago

From Chicago public transit to walking the city’s many neighbourhoods, there are plenty of ways to get around Chicago. Chicago’s streets are organized on a grid system. Madison Street divides the city north and south, while State Street divides it east and west, so it can be navigated on foot. Public transport options include the CTA that operates Chicago’s train and bus routes. Convenient CTA bus routes travel throughout the city, with stops every few blocks. The high-speed Metra commuter rail train connects outlying suburbs to downtown Chicago, and is a fast and easy way to travel to the heart of the city. Taxi’s and rideshare options are available to get you throughout the city. Water taxis offer fast, affordable connections to top tourist designations. Shuttles and limos services are a way to travel in style. Bicycles are available for hire and it’s easy to drive around town.

What is the main airport called?

Cairns Airport. Located 8km (5 miles) from the city centre, Cairns AirportOpens external site in a new window (CNS) is an international airport in Far North Queensland. There are two terminals: Terminal 1 - international airport and Terminal 2 - domestic airport.

Baggage allowance

Passengers on Qantas flights from Cairns are allocated a baggage allowance. If you require extra luggage for your trip, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online prior to departure.

Checking in

Passengers travelling from Cairns can check-in online up to 24 hours in advance, or visit a kiosk or desk to check-in at the terminal.

Can I cancel my flight booking due to COVID-19?

If your flights were booked through a travel agency or third-party website, please contact them directly to discuss your options.

If your plans have changed or you no longer wish to travel, visit Manage Booking to change your travel dates or cancel your flight and request a flight credit to use towards a future flight. Please visit our Booking changes and other options page for more information.

If we’ve cancelled your Qantas flight, including your Classic Flight Reward booking, wait to hear from us before changing your booking. We’ll be contacting anyone whose flight has been impacted as soon as possible.

 This offer applies to Qantas operated flights for the following dates: Australian Domestic: booked between 21 May 2020 and 28 February 2022, for travel between 12 June 2020 and 28 February 2022. Trans-Tasman: booked between 15 October 2020 and 28 February 2022, for travel between 16 October 2020 and 28 February 2022. International: booked between 25 February 2021 and 28 February 2022, for travel between 1 November 2021 and 31 December 2022. If you decide to change the date of your travel, we'll waive the change fee. You'll need to change your flight before your scheduled date of departure and select a new travel date within 12 months of your original booking date.
