Stretch your legs on the walking trails at Iningai Nature Reserve before browsing history at the Longreach Powerhouse Museum and The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.
Take a tour with Outback Dan at Camden Station and hear yarns of the past while exploring the historical homestead, shearing shed and cattle yards. Continue your walk back in time with Outback Pioneers - gallop on a Cobb & Co stagecoach, watch an old-time movie in the station store's cinema and be sure to catch the famous Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show.
Stay in one of the many hotels, motels and holiday parks in town. For a delicious local meal, there’s everything from the popular Merino Bakery to international cuisine and pub meals. Harry’s is a great option for dinner and the first-floor restaurant is named after local legend Harry Redford, or Captain Starlight.
Qantas Founders Museum
Longreach plays a huge role in Australia’s aviation history and there’s no better way to learn the stories, interact with aircraft and simulate old-fashioned flying than at Qantas Founders Museum.
Located right beside Longreach Airport, the museum is an independent, not-for-profit community organisation that has done an incredible job to preserve the story of Qantas and aviation history in Australia.
The collection includes four of the world’s most significant aircraft as well as full size replicas of some of Qantas’ early fleet. Visit the original Qantas hangar, tour the aircraft, walk on the wing of a giant Boeing 747 and interact with fascinating displays.
In these parts the history of aviation is intertwined with the pioneering history, and the museum offers a great insight into outback life in the 1920s. Be sure to grab a bite at the award-winning McGinness' Restaurant while you’re there.
Explore the outback
If you have more time up your sleeve, hit the road and experience the wonder of Outback Queensland.
A drive west will take you all the way to Lily Lagoon - a lily-filled waterhole on the Thomson River system perfect for bird-watching or a relaxing walk. The lake emerges temporarily, and usually after flooding, so check with the Visitor Information Centre in Longreach before making the four-hour drive.
Take a road-trip to the impressive Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum in Winton, part of the Australia’s Dinosaur Trail. Walk through life size bronze statues in Dinosaur Canyon and see the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world. Read more on Travel Insider.
