How one Australian transport business earns millions of Qantas Points through BP Plus

Scott Hannah, founder and managing director of transport and freight service Hannah’s Haulage, knows the importance of resilience and being prepared for any situation when running a business. Scott Hannah has certainly had his resilience put to the test in the two decades since he started his transport and freight business, Hannah’s Haulage. In fact, he has a theory: every 10 years, something is bound to go wrong. 

A mechanic by trade, Scott started out driving trucks for other companies before he was made redundant from his job in 2000. But it gave him the push to invest in his own six-tonne truck, expanding the team and fleet from there. 

In 2010, several long-term contracts came to a sudden halt and the company had to rebuild almost from scratch. Now, in 2020, the business is dealing with the ramifications of COVID-19. Despite each setback, Scott and his team have managed to survive and thrive: “You’ve got to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get on with things”.

“Back in the ’80s, you were on your own; you couldn’t rely on technology or satellites. If you broke down in the middle of the bush, you had to get yourself out of trouble by using your own knowledge or common sense,” he says. 

“You’ve got to be ready, willing and able and work as much as you need to get the job done. I’ve got good people around me as well – my wife is a big support – and I’ve always been a competitive sort of person. I don’t mind getting in and getting my hands dirty.” 

The key, he says, is being prepared to adjust when things don’t go to plan. For example, to help improve cash flow this year in the midst of COVID-19, the company sold off a number of older trailers and vehicles.

“I have holidays, of course, but you can’t take your finger off the pulse,” he says. 

Scott is always looking for ways to futureproof and maximise business opportunities, which is why he joined Qantas Business Rewards last year. 

Each week, Hannah’s Haulage spends about $100,000 on fuel across its fleet – an absolute necessity for the business. Scott also uses the credit card to earn Qantas Points on other business expenses such as vehicle registration (around $60,000 a month across the fleet). This year, he estimates, the company has accumulated an astonishing four million points. 

The BP Plus fuel card also helps to improve the business’s cash flow. The fuel expenses for the entire fleet come through in a single consolidated invoice with up to 51 days interest-free; and BP Plus online allows members to manage and view their accounts online 24/7 to easily keep track of their balance sheet.

“One invoice is great for ease of checking usage per driver and record keeping,” explains Scott. “BP has the best in this area.”

Scott has already used points for flights and accommodation at One&Only Wolgan Valley in NSW with his wife, as well as an annual trip to Queensland’s Hamilton Island. Next on the bucket list is seeing more of outback Australia.

“I think once we can start travelling again we would like to see Uluru and continue up through Darwin and over to Broome and Katherine,” he says. “Holidaying in Australia is gold, especially with these Qantas Points. The best facilities, the best airline, everything at the Qantas level is supreme. We can’t wait!”
