Existing medical conditions

Find out how we cover existing medical conditions.

How we cover existing medical conditions

We automatically cover over 40 existing medical conditions at no additional cost, provided you satisfy all criteria listed for the condition(s).

If your existing medical condition is not automatically covered under our policy, you have the option to complete a medical screening to see if we can cover your condition when purchasing via the Qantas InsuranceOpens external site website or by calling us on 13 49 60 (within Australia).

During the online medical screening, you’ll need to answer basic questions about your health and medical conditions. We use this information to determine whether we can provide cover and if there is an additional premium payable. You don’t have to purchase this additional cover. If you choose not to include this cover, you’ll still be covered for unrelated medical events under the applicable policy sections, but we just won’t cover any claims related to your existing medical conditions.

If you’ve already purchased a policy with your Qantas flights and need to add on cover for an existing medical condition, call us on 1800 954 270 (within Australia) to update your cover.

What is an existing medical condition?

We define an existing medical condition to be:

  1. Any sickness including mental health condition, injury or disability which in the one-year period before the Policy Issue Date:

    (a) you were aware of or a reasonable person in the circumstances could be expected to be aware of; and
    (b) such condition:

    (i) manifested itself, worsened, became acute or exhibited symptoms which would have caused an ordinarily prudent person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment;
(ii) required taking prescribed drugs or medicine, or tests or further investigation had been recommended by a medical practitioner; or
(iii) was treated by a medical practitioner or treatment had been recommended by a medical practitioner.

  2. Any congenital, chronic or ongoing condition which you are aware of, or a reasonable person in the circumstances could be expected to be aware of, before the Policy Issue Date.

We will not provide cover under any section of this policy for any claim arising directly or indirectly due to an existing medical condition, unless your existing medical condition is covered under Automatically Covered Conditions or we have agreed to cover your existing medical condition as a Specified medical condition, and you have paid any additional premium we may require.

Automatically covered medical conditions

Below is a list of automatically covered medical conditions under our policies, provided you meet the criteria we stated (if any) that shows the condition(s) is stable and controlled.

If you meet the criteria for all of your conditions, there is nothing you need to do to activate this cover.

If your existing medical condition is not listed below, or if you don’t meet the criteria stated, you have the option to complete a medical screening to see if we can cover your conditions.
