Following the Federal Government’s announcement that Australia’s international borders will open in November, Qantas will bring forward the restart of some international flights. More information on today’s announcement is available here.
1. Why is Qantas recommencing flying earlier than originally scheduled?
Qantas will bring forward the restart of some of its international flights to 14 November 2021, following the Federal Government’s announcement that Australia’s international borders will open in November.
2. What international flights is Qantas resuming and when?
From 14 November 2021, Qantas will resume flights from Sydney to Los Angeles and London (Heathrow). We will operate three return flights per week on each route with our Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Additional flights may be added, in line with demand.
Once the Federal Government announces the exact date that Australia’s international borders will reopen in November, the commencement dates for these two routes may need to be updated. Flights may be brought forward if it’s earlier than 14 November or moved to later in the month if necessary.
If other states and territories decide to open their borders earlier and reduce quarantine requirements, we may resume flights on other routes sooner, too.
3. When will these flights be available for sale?
Sydney-Los Angeles and Sydney-London are on sale from 1 October 2021, for travel from 14 November 2021.
4. When will Qantas resume international flights to other parts of its international network?
At this stage, all other international routes that are scheduled to resume from 18 December 2021 will continue as planned. If other states and territories open borders earlier and reduce quarantine requirements, we may resume flights on other routes sooner, too.
5. What are the requirements for customers to travel on Qantas international flights from 14 November 2021?
- Customers will be required to return a negative COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours prior to departure.
- Customers will be required to home quarantine for seven days on arrival into Australia, in accordance with the requirements from the Federal and New South Wales governments.
The details of travel requirements are being finalised, including advice on medical exemptions, and more information will be provided in coming weeks.
6. How will customers show their proof of vaccination and negative COVID test?
Customers will be required to show their proof of their negative COVID test result on arrival at the airport.
We are working with IATA on developing the IATA Travel Pass which will provide an easy and secure way for customers to share this information with Qantas prior to travel. There will also be an option for customers to provide a hard copy of their test results / vaccine certificate at the airport.
Further information will be provided to customers in coming weeks.
7. Where are customers required to take their PCR test? Who will pay for these tests?
We will provide customers with details of the certified labs for PCR tests in the coming weeks. PCR testing must be completed within 72 hours of the scheduled departure. PCR tests are the customer’s expense.
The details of travel requirements are being finalised and more information will be provided in coming weeks.
8. Are customers who live outside of NSW able to travel to/from Sydney on a Qantas international flight?
Yes. However, customers will need to follow the relevant health and quarantine requirements to return back to their home state if it is not NSW.
The Federal and NSW Governments are finalising requirements and details for eligible travellers arriving into Australia. At this stage, they have indicated that fully vaccinated travellers will be required to home quarantine for seven days.
We advise customers to continue to refer to the Federal Government and NSW Government websites for the latest information. Qantas will provide customers with updated travel advice closer to travel.
9. What options are available if I am booked to travel to London (Heathrow) or Los Angeles on/after 18 December and now wish to change my flight to travel earlier?
Under our Fly Flexible policy, customers with international bookings have the flexibility to make ‘fee free’ date changes for travel until 31 December 2022 which includes moving to an earlier flight (a fare difference may apply).
10. If the Federal Government opens Australia’s borders earlier or later than anticipated, and Qantas resumes flights earlier or later than 14 November 2021, what are my options?
Once the Federal Government announces the exact date that Australia’s international borders will reopen in November, the commencement dates for these two routes may need to be updated. Flights will be brought forward if it’s earlier than 14 November or moved to later in the month if necessary. Customers booked on these flights will have the flexibility to make fee free date changes for travel until 31 December 2022 (subject to availability, and a fare difference may apply). If flights are cancelled by Qantas customers are also eligible for a refund or credit voucher.
