This Could Be the Most Exciting Way to Travel from Asia to Australia

All-inclusive Silversea Voyage and Luxury Eastern Oriental Express Rail

Hike volcanoes in Bali, see dragons up close on Komodo Island and snorkel through the Great Barrier Reef.

On the luxurious 22-night rail and sail journey, the All-inclusive Silversea Voyage and Luxury Eastern Oriental Express Rail, you’ll travel through the jungles of Malaysia for four nights on a luxury vintage train before heading south from Singapore on an all-inclusive cruise to sunny Brisbane.

Here’s what you can expect on this unforgettable expedition from Asia to Australia.

Make your way through Malaysia by rail

The excitement begins the moment you land in Singapore. Indulge in chilli crab from a hawker market, stroll through the illuminated Gardens by the Bay and explore Kampong Glam, the city’s Arab quarter and order a kaya Swiss roll from Rich & Good Cake Shop while you’re there.

Settle in for the night at the five-star Grand Park City Hall, a sleek stay with contemporary rooms with views over the Lion City and a European-style fine diner, Tablescape Restaurant & Bar. Expect classic dishes with a twist, including squid ink spaghetti aglio olio with pumpkin and Sardinian bottarga.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

On day two, it's all aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, a luxurious rail experience comprising warm service, sumptuous accommodation – carriages are fitted with intricate marquetry and vintage fabrics that celebrate Asia – and thrilling off-train excursions.

As the train meanders through rice paddies, historic towns and lush jungles, you’ll take in the views from the lounge in your cabin, over breakfast and coffee in the Dining Car and while sipping cocktails in the Piano Bar.

Along the way, you’ll stop to take a boat to Langkawi, in Malaysia’s north, to picnic at Pulau Payar Marine Park before loosening your shoulders with a massage, or perhaps tai chi. Just further south, Penang’s Georgetown Old Quarter is where you can take a cooking class in Peranakan cuisine, famous for its bold use of coconut milk, galangal and kaffir lime leaf.

Rolling back into Singapore, you’ll spend a second night at Grand Park City Hall before boarding Silversea’s Silver Muse with the coordinates set for Brisbane.

This opulent South Pacific journey includes a 17-night all inclusive journey from Singapore to Brisbane on the Silversea Silver Muse plus a complimentary journey on the Eastern & Oriental Express Rail Journey for $15,999pp. The package departs on 16 October 2024 and  is exclusive to Imagine Holidays and saves customers who would build a similar itinerary up to $11,000 per couple.

Cruise in comfort through Australia’s top end

Over 17 nights en route to Australia’s northern peninsulas, you’ll explore ancient temples, jungle-hemmed beaches and spot exotic wildlife by day, before returning each evening to the all-inclusive comforts of Silver Muse.

Spend the first few days getting acquainted with the ship’s luxurious amenities. Make the most of the round-the-clock butler service that is available in all suites or take in a world-class show in the belle-époque cabaret setting of the Venetian Lounge.  Take a dip in the onboard pool, unwind in the sauna and dine at La Terrazza – an Italian restaurant with alfresco seating that serves dishes such as cotoletta alla milanese di fassone piemontese (crumbed veal cutlet with potato puree).

Staff on Silversea's Silver Muse liner

Benoa, Bali, is the liner’s first port of call. Cliffside temples and sleepy fishing villages set the scene for hiking along a trail of active volcanoes, visiting lush rice terraces and paragliding over the coastline.

The 40-kilometre long island of Komodo lies ahead and here guests can observe its prehistoric namesake reptile along with water buffalo, dolphins, dugong and Timor deer. But large reptilian encounters don’t end there, with Darwin the next stop on the itinerary. Crocodiles patrol the jungled waterways of Kakadu National Park, which are best explored on a 90-minute Yellow Water Boat Cruise. Treat yourself afterwards by sampling the city’s unique flavours at the Mindil Beach Sunset Market.

Hayman Island, Whitsundays Beach, Queensland

In Cairns, guests can snorkel the Great Barrier Reef or take a tour through the tropical rainforest with a First Nations guide to learn about Australia’s endemic wildlife. More Great Barrier Reef adventures await in Townsville, where a ferry to the palm-fringed beaches, coral reefs and resident koalas of Magnetic Island takes just 20 minutes.

Day 20 will bring you to The Whitsundays, with the ship docking in Shute Harbour, near Airlie Beach. Hike to lookout points such as Mount Rooper and take in the panoramic views or organise your own trip out to the powdery sands of Whitehaven Beach.

The surfer’s haven of Mooloolaba, 97 kilometres north of Brisbane, is the penultimate port: book a river cruise to discover the Sunshine Coast and surrounds; sit down to a satisfying meal of just-caught prawns, fresh off the trawler; or head to the hinterland for art, cheese and wine in the Blackall Ranges.

Passengers disembark in Brisbane, but that’s no reason to head straight home. Dive into the city’s thriving culinary scene with a detour to contemporary-Chinese restaurant Stanley at Howard Smith Wharves and order a serve of the Peking duck pancakes before heading homeward.
